The Project Engineer is responsible for leading engineering projects from origination through development, detailed design, procurement, construction, start-up and commissioning to help develop, deploy and improve unique and proprietary chemical process technology across multiple sites. The Project Engineer will perform work individually or as part of a team across functional departments in a multidisciplinary environment and utilize both inside and outside resources to complete the assigned work. Key technological areas will focus on solids handling, enzymatic reactions, fermentation, distillation, evaporation, catalytic reactions, fractional distillation, hydrocarbon purification, utilities, and process safety. This position will also provide technical and engineering support to other functional groups within the organization as required to achieve Business Objectives. These additional Departments include, but are not limited to, Capital Projects, Plant Operation, Plant Maintenance, Safety-Health and Environmental, Business Development and Regulatory Compliance.

Our salary ranges are based on national averages. We have wide ranges so we can be flexible and determine compensation based on a number of factors including the candidate's skills, level of experience, and location (which can be anywhere in the US). For Colorado-based candidates, the salary range for this position starts at $132, 000 per year. Compensation at all other locations will be based on the factors as stated above.

Job Description

Who You Are

- At least 6 years of experience in an engineering role within the petro-chemical or refinery industry; and/or
- Experience in an engineering role within the petro-chemical or refinery industry.
- Experience with renewable fuels manufacturing and the renewable energy industry preferably in sectors sensitive to carbon intensity and carbon footprint.
- Experience with development and execution of medium to large size capital projects in the chemical process industry in OSHA / PSM regulated environments.
- You are comfortable working remotely and have the ability to travel to work sites to work for weeks at a time as necessary during project development.
- Experience with multiple project delivery methods including EPC contracts, Modular Fabrication contracts, Detailed Engineering contracts, and Consulting Engineering Services contracts.
- Experience with commercial project execution, scheduling and tracking software such as MS Project or Primavera P6.
- Able to work closely with project originators and vested parties to understand the ultimate project goals, requirements and constraints and provide technical and engineering expertise to define project deliverables, scopes of work, work breakdown structures, essential resources, and projections of cost and schedule as required by Gevo s stage-gate project development and approval process.
- Lead design and engineering efforts by either individually performing or coordinating the efforts of other team members and other disciplines as required by the project. Customary project engineering efforts may include, but not limited to, material and energy balances, process modeling, PFD s, P&ID s, equipment specifications, process descriptions, process hazards analysis, plant layouts, general arrangement drawings, site civil design, foundations, structural steel, piping design, electrical design, and instrumentation & controls.
- Prepare and update project cost estimates of different types and accuracies as required by the stage-gate approval process. These may include, but are not limited to, preliminary estimates, budgetary estimates, for-approval: estimates, and definitive (Contractor) estimates.
- Be responsible for cost controls measures either individually or in collaboration with the Project Manager or other project team members.
- Prepare and update detailed project schedules for all scope of work and milestones. The Project Engineer will be responsible for schedule controls measures either individually or in collaboration with the Project Manager or other project team members.
- Support the project procurement process by providing equipment, materials, and services specifications or drawings, reviewing and approving vendor submittals, qualifying vendors, preparing Bid packages and participating on Bid reviews and award efforts or any other requests made by Purchasing Group.
- Generate and publish project progress reports to all management, peers, and all other vested parties including updates on safety, scope, milestones, cost, schedule, and all other items relevant top project execution.
- Develop and perform operating and maintenance personnel process training and qualification programs either individually or as part of a team.
- Support Capital Projects Team with equipment design, sizing, cost estimating, justification analysis, construction and installation supervision, construction walk-downs, check-out, start-up, commissioning, field engineering, and documentation. Project Engineer may also be required to support the environmental permitting process, regulatory compliance efforts and provide support to the contract s generation process.
- Support Operations Team as required to ensure safe manufacturing procedures including process troubleshooting, development of standard operating procedures (SOP s), support the Management of Change (MOC) process, and any other activity requested in furtherance of a safe and efficient operation.
- Support Environmental, Health, Safety and Regulatory Teams with process related information, analysis, and compliance procedures.
- Work closely with outside design and engineering firms, manufacturers, fabricators, vendors, and contractors in the development, specification, fabrication or construction of equipment materials, or services related to chemical process technology by providing, instructions, revision, inspection, or approvals of all outside work.
- Work in a collaborative way with all other members of the organization across department lines, functional groups and disciplines in support of process technology development and deployment across multiple sites as required by direct supervisor.
